Basic information

  • TDE version: R14.0.9
  • Distribution: Ubuntu 20.04 ISO at mirror.ppa.trinitydesktop.org/trinity/cdimages/ubuntu/ -->
  • Hardware: Not applicable

Description

In one of the tips in the KTip application, it says "his or her files" which is not gender-neutral, it would be better to say "their files" as this includes everyone and is used by most modern software

Steps to reproduce

Go through KTip until you see the one that says that each UNIX user has a home folder

That's a good point. Are there any other places where such language usage exists?

I haven't found any so far, but in another one of the tips it says TDE is about freedom and choice and in contrast to that it supports different backends, but supporting different backends is supporting freedom and choice and isn't against it

Ok, I'll check out the tips you mentioned tomorrow. Thank you for reporting.

All occurences of non-gender-neutral language in tdebase have been replaced, including the tip you mentioned (some more could be hiding in tde-i18n). I'll take a look through other packages to see whether any other changes are needed.

I think you might have misunderstood that a little. "In contrast" refers to the previous sentence, which is "It will not patronize you as a user and will not force you to use specific tools or init systems".

As the related changes have been made in most basic packages I'll close this issue. If I missed some non-gender-neutral text in the base packages or any other occurence of such language is to be found in one of the application packages, this issue can be reopened.

P.S. @Fredd-Green You say that you use version R14.0.9, but this is a really old release, so you will probably not see the changes unless you update to R14.0.13 (when that is released) or to the PSB repository (read more on the wiki).

Lame. This is a propaganda attempt to redefine language. "His" is already gender-neutral in standard English.

@luke-jr Propaganda is quite the heavy word. Besides, the usage of the plural they/their/them is not a new thing. What is wrong with redefining (or dare I say refining) language anyway? Language is not something that's set in stone, it changes dependent on what people want to do with it. I don't think that using words that are considered gender-neutral by more people is harmful in any way.

Refining would be the opposite direction: getting rid of plural language for singular persons, and making gender-neutral "he" even more common.

Going along with left-extremist propaganda like this, often alienates non-leftists.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but many people would disagree. I will refrain from making any more comments on this issue.

When I started writing texts in programs, user manuals and translate user manuals, there we have always had a rule: to address users in the second person plural. Because you never know whether you will address one user or group, and you don't even know what people will be members of such a group. We used this rule more than twenty years ago, when no one dealt with the theme of gender neutrality. Obviously it is a timeless rule, because the same principle is still valid today and has been used now.

Sounds like a good approach

Wow, I didn't know about that rule. This might be the best approach after all.

I think we should avoid getting into a debated talking point. Different people will have different opinions and preferences, it is impossible to please all. I see the point of @Fredd-Green but I also see the one from @luke-jr. You are both right in your own way. for me "his + her" was already fine enough for example. Just my two cents :-)

Should we consider closing this issue now? Several gender neutral corrections have been made and if more are spotted, we just need to fix them.
@SlavekB what do you think?
