I tried it on a machine where I use TDE v3.5.13.x and here the problem does not occur == the root folder is still with the folder icon. It seems to be a regression in R14.0.x.

Yes, exactly - in R14.0.x bug is here, in v3.5.13.x does not occur.

Problem resolved with PR TDE/tdelibs#129.
Not closing yet due to PR #194.
