Basic information

  • Distribution: Debian Bullseye
  • Hardware: amd64

Description

I'm sorry to post this as a bug. But I don't know what else to do; I am completely out of ideas :-( I am unable to restore my subscription to users@trinitydesktop.org

Steps to reproduce

  1. I have been subscribed to users@trinitydesktop.org since 2017, under the e-mail address: doc.evans@gmail.com.

  2. A few days ago I went to send a question to users@trinitydesktop.org, and noticed that the last e-mail I received from the reflector were my most recent posts, in October and November of last year. Since then I have received nothing.

  3. I then posted an e-mail asking if the reflector was still in use.

  4. I did not receive a copy of the post from the reflector. I also did not
receive a bounce message, so I don't know whether the post actually made it to the reflector and, if it did, whether it was posted.

  5. I went to https://www.trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist.php. From there I
    followed the link to
    https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydesktop.org.
That showed me a lot of posts that I never received, and also did NOT
show me the e-mail I sent in step 4. (Interestingly, it shows the post I
made in October as being correctly archived... and also several replies
to that post -- that I never received via e-mail. The thread topic was: "can one
    auto-fit image previews in konqueror?")

  6. So I clicked on "Manage subscription", which took me to
    https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/hyperkitty/list/users@trinitydesktop.org.
There I tried to log in, and the system said that it had sent me an
    e-mail for verification.

  7. I waited a couple of days, but I never received the verification e-mail (I checked my gmail spam folder as well, but it wasn't there either).

  8. Returning to https://www.trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist.php, I followed the
instructions and sent an empty e-mail to users-join@trinitydesktop.org.

  9. After a couple more days, I have received no response to that e-mail.

  10. Following the instructions at
    https://mail.trinitydesktop.org/mailman3/postorius/lists/users.trinitydesktop.org/,
I sent an e-mail with the above information to users-owner@trinitydesktop.org, and requested help. After a couple of days, I have received no response.

  11. So in a final act of desperation, I am posting this as a bug :-( Basically, I can find no way to restore my subscription for doc.evans@gmail.com to users@trinitydesktop.org, despite following all the instructions I can find. (Also, I don't know why my subscription ceased, silently and without warning, a few months ago; but I'll be happy just to be able to restore it.)

Hi @N7DR Doc,
I checked the list, you are listed as a non-member. This means you previously posted to the list but you are currently not subscribed.

Perhaps gmail is blocking the posts to/from the mailing list? have you tried using a different email address to make sure everything else is fine on your side?

There have been problems with delivery to GMail for some time. I tried to change ML settings so that all ML messages contain our DKIM signature, but it seems that GMail is still not satisfied.

It seems that it will force us to set up SPF record, although I do not like this technology because it has a bad design, which makes it irreparable. And at the same time it is virtually unnecessary thanks to DKIM. Next to this, I will have to gain experience with DMARC, because it will probably be also necessary … and, depending on what I found, DMARC requires to have SPF set. Despite all SPF problems, there is a strong pressure to use this bad technology. 😠

Rather to my surprise, I did receive both of your comments as e-mails to my @gmail.com address. Presumably that happened because somehow the bug system is configured differently from the ML, and gmail is happy (for now) to deliver messages from the bug system.

I could write a book (well, a chapter of a book) about gmail and SPF. It's a mess. And not even a predictable mess, in that not all @gmail.com addresses are treated the same. I did some tests with someone last month, and we discovered that an identical e-mail sent from the same address was bounced when sent to one gmail account, but delivered when sent to another gmail account.

So it may be that some people with gmail addresses are still subscribed and receiving e-mails from the ML just fine. Others, like me, may not even be aware that they've been auto-unsubscribed because gmail bounced ML messages sent to them and the ML software saw the bounces and unsubscribed them (which is what I assume happened to me).

Although I hate to do it, the SPF record was set up. I hope the record should be sufficiently promoted, so you can try to subscribe again.

@SlavekB BTW I tried to subscribe to the WIKI and it said it sent confirmation mail, but it never showed up in the mailbox. I used deloptes@gmail.com

Can you check by chance?

thank you in advance

This morning I tried resubscribing to tde-users by following these instructions:

To subscribe, send an empty Email to users-join@trinitydesktop.org

which are at: https://www.trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist.php.

Unfortunately, I've seen no evidence that my subscription request did anything. No confirmation e-mail has showed up in my inbox or in spam, and it's been more than an hour now since I tried to subscribe.

I don't know whether there's some sort of moderation process so that someone has to accept the request manually; if so, then maybe that's the problem. But if it's all supposed to happen automatically, then subscription from a gmail.com address still doesn't seem to be working.

As Mike confirmed in a private mail, although we made settings of ugly DNS records so that the mails could be considered trustworthy, it is not enough for GMail anyway.

relay=gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com. [142.250.27.27],
 dsn=5.0.0, stat=Service unavailable

Although the email is a standard public service, GMail is likely to require a GMail specific verification that requires to create a GMail account 😠

I've recently had to set up a mail server with the whole bunch (DKIM, DMARC, SPF) and had an issue with the last one, so here's some thoughts:

I had spent quite some time trying to get GMail to let emails from that domain pass. It occured that I had to run a DMARC service on the host for the mail to pass SPF verification with GMail. Also I had misconfigured OpenDMARC so it failed silently with a cryptic "Service unavailable" milter failure in the mail system log file. After I solved problems with DMARC the SPF checks succeeded and mail seems to be delivered ok.

This page mostly helped me set it all up: https://petermolnar.net/article/howto-spf-dkim-dmarc-postfix/. A point of interest it mentions is that "DMARC and SPF can break mailing lists for the same reasons as forwarding".
