This way it follows the style of the other TDE applications. The about dialog shows in the description that it is a panel. But the side effect of the old name was, that I had to deal with some users who weren't knowing if their panel is Kicker or not, because they had no chance to know that otherwise. With this change users learn that the panel is Kicker. That is of use, if they want tot report bugs against it.

That seems to be a good idea. In addition to the name of the application, there is a description that contains the information that it is a TDE Panel. So yes, the name of the application may be Kicker in accordance with common practice.
