This is a small subset of PR #19 to be backported to R14.0.x. This also should fix bug 3110.
Could you test on a R14.0.x machine and let me know if there is any side effect, since not all code of #19 is going to be backported.
Tested on Pinebook Pro, where I actually noticed problems due to the PulseAudio present, and on a desktop machine, where I hadn't noticed any problems before.
Now it works on both properly 👍
By the way, PR #19 should probably be merged before this PR, because later commits that are mentioned in cherry-pick may become invalid in the master branch.
