Delete Branch '%!s(<nil>)'
Deleting a branch is permanent. It CANNOT be undone. Continue?
Many apps are performing various queries at freedb.freedb.org.
Might as well switch to freedb.freac.org.
See this commit for reference:

@cethyel, great you thought about that. 👍
I already talked with Slavek about possible alternatives, but back then, it seems there was no direct mirror of the freedb database. The question would be, if the freac project intents to maintain that server only temporary or permanently.
I think as long as the new db is maintained, it makes sense to switch to it. If later in future it disappers, we can think about it when it happens.
Since freedb.freac.org points to http://www.freedb.org/ we might not even have to change any url queries. We shall see in few days, to be continued...
It may work for a while as long as freedb.freac.org points to http://www.freedb.org. But it would stop once if it stops pointing in future...
It seems that the name
freedb.freac.org
could act as a maintained alias referring to a working freedb server:So using
freedb.freac.org
seems like a good idea.In any case, for reference, freedb.freedb.org occurrences appear in:
It seems freedb.freac.org:8880 is not available while freedb.freedb.org:8880 is still accessible. Perhaps we need to delay the switch??
Also I found this:
https://audio-file.org/2016/11/24/gnudb-org-cd-metadata-database/
which suggests this other website
http://www.gnudb.org/
This is working and has been there for at least 3 or 4 years, so it seems reliable.
What is your thoughts?
@MicheleC The last one was the one I suggested Slavek back in time too. But I am not sure if it is up to date still.
Otherwise, there is no real reason not to wait just a little bit more, or?
According to this statement http://www.freedb.org/en/
We might not have to change nothing, let's wait and test this functionality later.
ok, let's wait and see. if it stops working, then we can change later
based on Greg's comment, should we then close this issue for the time being? or keep it open?
If the issue is closed, I'll probably forget about. @MicheleC will you remember to give this a test, let's say, next week?
https://www.magix.info/us/forum/is-freedb-not-available--1229936/#ca1502719
Let's keep an eye on this, we can ask Robert Kausch from freac.org next week.
Ok, let's keep this issue open, as a reminder. Otherwise we will surely forget sooner or later 😉
Reminder: What Greg quoted was something I believed first too. But after searching a bit and learned about history I learned, this message about Magix is very old and in fact, Magix bought out freedb back in 2006. So this should be not relevant. They provided freedb since then - Well, until now, it seems.
I think it's better to let this issue open too.
Although the service on the original
freedb.org
is still functional, I am somewhat restless. We want to rely on the original intention being canceled? Or would we rather change the address tognudb.org
?uhm... if freedb.org is still functional, let's keep it unchanged for the time being. If one day it stops working, we can switch to gnudb.org.
we don't know if gnudb is more or less updated compared to freedb, but freedb has been there for long time, so it should be naturally more known and so more updated.
The closing didn't happem It seems, so as long as freedb.org is working (and there are no users blowing the horn for help 😌 ), I don't feel the urge...
Okay, well, you've dispelled my concerns. For R14.0.8 we leave it unchanged.
All instances of freedb.org have been reppalced with gnudb.org. We can finally close this issue.
